What is a home measurement or floorplan service?

Floorplan services are just what they sound like: Based on what you want, an appraiser will measure your house's dimensions and square footage, then draw a basic or highly detailed layout. The appraiser's report and floorplan is a document that can be used to prove the accurate Gross Living Area (GLA), the total livable area, of your home. These services are useful and often necessary when challenging property taxes or selling a property.

How do home measurement services work?

During a measurement service, an appraiser takes measurements of the home or property with a measuring tool — either a tape or laser measuring device. As they walk the home, they mark the layout of the rooms and other features, like closets, hallways, and pantries. They might draw a rough sketch of the property.
